DAD'S HOMEMADE ELECTRIC FENCE CHARGER

Entry for March 11, 2008 HOMEMADE ELECTRIC FENCE CHARGER..?????? magnify
A funny story that happen to my late Dad years ago that always brings a smile to my face and loving memories of my Dad.
We were building a house for someone and the electrican was prewiring the house. John was a great friend of Dad's as well as the best electrican in our town. Dad was talking about going to the local Co-Op to purchase an electric fence charger after work to hook up to the fence he had just installed before he bought some pigs to raise. John spoke up and told Dad that he could show him how to made a fence charger that would only cost about $2.00. Man, Dad was all ears to hear how to made that simple device.
John's instructions to Dad on how to build the charger. Hubert, you go to the hardware store and get one of those keyless light fixtures that has two wire terminals and a place for the light bulb. You know the type, all older houses came with them as light fixtures. Dad said yes, I know what you mean. OK, Hubert here is how to made a fence charger, Get a drop cord with a plug on one end and on the other end connect one of the wires to one of the light fixture's terminals. the remaining wire connect it to your fence wire. Into the fixture install a 7 1/2 watt light bulb, made sure you use only a 7 1/2 watt bulb. Plug your cord into a 110volt outlet and you have a cheap fence charger that only comes on when something touches it, and zap it shocks what ever touches the fence. Dad can't wait to get home and fix his cheap charger.
Things go good on hooking the device up to the fence. Dad forgets, the important part, ONLY USE A 7 1/2 WATT BULB. Dad puts a 100 watt bulb into the charger. He decides since the charger is working to let Mom's hens out of there area into the larger lot.
The next morning mother goes out to check to see if she has any eggs. To her amazement Dad has fried 8 of her hens with that cheap charger. Dad didn't take much of the blame, poor old John got most of the blame. Dad bought a real fence charger that day.

  5. Great story. I wanna know what happens if you DO use the 7.5w bulb. Any problems at all?

I'm wondering, also, if one wire was left out of your original written schematic? It sounds like one wire from the 110v outlet goes to the light fixture with the 7.5w bulb, and the other one goes to the insulated, bared, wire around the chicken coop (or yard); that's it. Raccoons are my problem.
